Progeny: Standing on Shoulders

Entering the third decade of my life
The sun beams strong.
And I feel the time has come for me
To write down this song.
But, the time is not my own.
I’m a product of family and home.
A crop of seeds well sown.
Of musicians and tailors and athletes.
Drifters who lie on forbidden streets.
I owe them all that I am and all I will be.

There’s not a lot to say about this tune. I was in my early 20’s and thinking about my family and the fact that I didn’t really know very much about my ancestors.

And yet, I was grateful that they had succeeded in giving me enough tools so I could survive, grow, and learn. So I wanted to thank them somehow and this was the best way I knew.

The song consists of a single guitar (with dropped D) and three vocals.

The song was recorded in Morgantown, WV in the spring of 1987 in 4-track mono and mixed to stereo on a TASCAM multi-track recorder. The final recording was mastered using Cool96.
