The mental storyboard for this song involves a street dweller waking up on a chilly morning and (with hands in pockets and smoking a cigarette) shuffling down the sidewalk while thinking about satisfying his various cravings.
The song features my long-gone Martin D15-M. If the chords sound familiar, you have a good ear. They are the same chords as ELP’s From the Beginning. The bass and organ drive the character forward and the drums emphasize the dragging of heels and toes. The guitar is the character’s sights and smells (flavor). Oh, yeah there are also sad strings.
The song’s conclusion is the achievement of a goal (it could be anything, but in my head, it’s a soup kitchen).
